Tutorial on Embodiment

5.2. Learning Categories

We, as humans, are capable of seamlessly discriminating objects. However, what are the mechanisms behind this feat that we exercise every minute? And how can artificial agents achieve this mastery? In this section, we will first look at how infants learn about objects. Then, we will look at different kinds of categorization in artificial agents. As we proceed, we will encounter additional examples of how embodiment helps to generate structured information that is needed to perform categorization (Information self-structuring through sensory-motor coordination). Finally, we will propose a link from embodiment to high-level abstract thinking.
