CITEC Summer School 2012: Verbal and non-verbal communication: From experiments to implementation

Humans, as well as animal or artificial agents are continuously confronted with the problem of understanding each other. What are the mechanisms that shape communicative behaviour, what makes it so efficient in natural environments and what is the key for the improvement of it in artificial contexts? Dialogue coordination (alignment) in normal and noisy environments, intention understanding (pragmatic and joint attention), non-verbal cues (gestures and facial expression decoding), and asymmetric communication are some common challenges for interactive systems, and they require efficient verbal and non-verbal interaction. This will involve approaches from experimental psychology, cognitive sciences, computational modelling, neuroinformatics, gesture studies, animal communication, human-machine interaction and robotics.

Event dates: 26 - 31 August, 2012
